Abstract: Ampicillin resistance in clinical isolates of enterobacteriaceae has been on the increase in the last decade. A study was carried out to delineate the possible mechanisms of this resistance. The method employed was isoelectric focussing to observe the electrophoretic mobility of the enzyme responsible and this showed that TEM 1 betalactamase was the cause irrespective of the species.
